Jay Monico is a Senior Associate Attorney with Federal Criminal Defense Lawyers, representing clients in general federal criminal defense matters throughout San Diego and the Southern District of California. Bilingual in English and Spanish, Jay is well-equipped to represent clients and their families through every stage of a federal case, ensuring nothing is lost in translation when the stakes are this high.
Originally from El Salvador, Jay is a former United States Marine, honorably discharged after earning the Good Conduct Medal, and he brings that same sense of duty and discipline to his legal practice. He earned his Juris Doctor from Thomas Jefferson School of Law in 2016 and was admitted to the State Bar of California in 2017. Jay has been recognized as a Super Lawyers Rising Star for 2025–2026, a distinction awarded to the top 2.5% of attorneys in the state.
Jay’s practice focuses on the federal cases that define the Southern District of California’s border-region docket: money laundering, sex trafficking, and border-related prosecutions. In one notable case, Jay represented a client charged with assaulting a federal employee with a deadly weapon, securing a not-guilty verdict after just ninety minutes of jury deliberation. Clients facing a federal indictment, a target letter, or a grand jury subpoena benefit from an advocate who understands both the legal and cultural context of their case.
